Parquet is one of the most beautiful and durable floor coverings. But in the process of its operation, some problems sometimes arise: over time, the tree can dry out, burst, get wet. Scratches, cracks appear on the varnish of the parquet, it can peel off, diverge. In this case, it will be necessary to repair the parquet floor in the apartment. In some cases, you can eliminate the defects of parquet and laminate with your own hands, others will require the help of specialists.
Peeling parquet slabs from the base
This is one of the most common problems. Parquet dies do not hold in their proper places and pop out. As a result, the floors creak, knock, lose their pleasant aesthetic appearance. The reason for this phenomenon may be poor-quality parquet laying or high humidity. The material used may be of poor quality. Much depends on what kind of glue is used. Floor repair from parquet boards with such a defect will depend on which base is under the coating - concrete or wood.
If the draft floor is concrete, then the restoration of the parquet is carried out as follows:
- Delaminated dies are removed from the nests, the space under them is cleaned: dust, debris, dirt, old mastic, etc. are removed.
- The cleaned floor is primed and dried thoroughly.
- While the primer is drying, parquet planks are sorted out: if they are not deformed, they look good outwardly, then it is not necessary to change them, just clean them. If the boards are damaged, it is better to take new ones instead.
- A special glue for parquet is applied to the prepared base and the parquet board is glued.
How to repair a parquet floor if a wooden base is used? The technology for attaching the slats changes slightly:
- First, all preparatory operations are performed: the planks are removed, their nests are cleaned, and dried.
- A water-dispersion or polyurethane adhesive is spread on the parquet planks and placed in the prepared grooves.
- For greater reliability, parquet dies can be nailed along the edge. To prevent the nail heads from sticking out, they are bitten off with pliers and recessed by 2-3 mm.
Important! The gap between the dies or the diverging seam is filled with polymer putty on wood or a cement-sawdust mixture. It is prepared from a mixture of glue, sawdust, cement and water in a ratio of 5:2:5:14. The finished mixture is applied with a rubber spatula to the seam and allowed to dry.
After the completion of the restoration work, the surface of the parquet is scraped and varnished.
Swelling of dies, swelling of individual sections of the parquet floor
If the room is very damp, then the parquet may swell. Damp planks bulge ugly, warp, deform. Eliminating this defect is difficult, but possible.

This is the leader among all parquet problems. The creak of the parquet can talk about a variety of problems: a violation of the laying technology, drying out of the dies, rubbing of the boards on nails or each other, their displacement, etc.Before taking any action, it is necessary to identify the cause of the phenomenon.
In most cases, more secure fastening of the planks to the floor helps to pacify creaky parquet.
- Find creaking dies.
- Fasten the nails with rivets. If necessary, clog new ones, sink hats.
- All gaps and cracks are puttied.
- Then the parquet is sanded and varnished.
The most problematic option is when the parquet floor creaks due to the fact that the base is uneven or the laying technology is broken. Then you will have to remove the flooring completely, eliminate the defects of the base and only then lay the parquet again.
Scratches, abrasions on the floor
The parquet is very whimsical. It requires constant care and increased attention to itself. But no matter how carefully the owner monitors the parquet flooring, the lacquered layer will become covered with scratches over time, it will wear out, etc. To avoid this and maximize the life of the parquet, it is necessary to scrape and varnish the floor covering every 5–6 years.
How to do it? In fact, there is nothing complicated in the procedure for such parquet repair, it resembles general cleaning. Work is being carried out in several stages.
First preparation:
- They remove all damaged and deformed boards, burst parquet, correct if some of their dies have moved from their places, eliminate squeaks, etc.
- All seams and gaps between the dies are covered with putty on wood or cement-sawdust mortar.
When all the preparatory steps are completed, you can start scraping. It is carried out using a special apparatus - a scraping machine. You can buy it, but such a device is quite expensive, so it will be easier and cheaper to rent it or invite an experienced craftsman who can correctly and efficiently repair the parquet floor in the apartment. The price will, however, increase significantly.
The technology looks like this:
- Grinding. At this stage, coarse discs with large grains are used. Thanks to this work, you can remove the old varnish so that it does not crumble, as well as trim the floor.
- Often, after grinding, gaps appear between the dies. They need to be covered with cement-sawdust mortar.
- Now they sand a little more with fine-grained sandpaper to finally level the floor.
- The parquet is cleaned of debris and dust, if necessary, dried.
- A special primer or nitro-lacquer is applied to the parquet. The product is allowed to dry and trimmed with fine sandpaper. Then the next layer is applied and all procedures are repeated again. At least 3 coats of primer must be applied to the floor.
- Finally, after all layers of the primer have dried, the floor is varnished. Lacquer is also applied in several layers, grinding all intermediate ones.
- After a few days, the varnish will pick up a fortress, and then it will be possible to put into operation your repaired parquet.
It is quite possible to repair the parquet floor with your own hands. However, some skills and abilities are required. The first time will be difficult, but then things will get more fun. Most importantly, remember that the parquet floor must be monitored. Without proper care, the parquet will crack, the planks may disperse, and as a result, the floor covering will quickly become unusable.
Laminate problems
Laminate can be used as a cheap analogue of parquet. It is much cheaper, durable, resistant to various damages and looks nice. However, he is not alien to all the problems of flooring. Laminate, as well as parquet, can swell, deform, scratches and chips appear on it, locks can diverge, etc. However, in most cases these problems can be solved. It is much more difficult to choose a material that would fit an existing laminate. However, it is much easier to repair a laminate floor than parquet.
- Most scratches can be masked with a special wax pencil. This is sufficient if only the top laminated layer is damaged. The tool is selected to match the floor.
- To repair the laminate with your own hands, putty may also be needed if the scratches are deep.
- If the damage is significant, then the entire lamella will have to be replaced. To do this, you will have to disassemble the flooring, replace the damaged area and lay everything back.
