Models that have a fixed installation height include the following types:
- Shells with a pedestal (tulip). Although there is one caveat here. If desired, the pedestal can be placed on a concrete elevation or parapet, thus increasing the installation height. There are several ways to install the sink:
- The most common option is to mount the sink on the brackets. For its implementation, it is necessary to make accurate measurements, mark on the wall at the level of the optimal mark height. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the washbasin. Perhaps the reason for this lies in the fact that the pedestal is completely non-functional. It serves more as an ornament than it does any good. Although with its help you can successfully hide all communications. The disadvantage of this method is that manufacturers of pedestals almost never make them higher than the standard 50 cm. That is, in order to set the sink to the optimal height, you will have to make an additional step or order a pedestal individually. Both of these options threaten to increase the cost of repairs in the bathroom.
- An easier way compared to the one described above is to install the washbasin on the cabinet. The sizes of cabinets are more diverse, so it will be much easier to choose the optimal model. With this method, there is no need to install brackets, which also simplifies the installation procedure. The height of the installed sink here will be almost equal to the height of the cabinet or slightly exceed it, that is, the height of the cabinet should be approximately equal to the calculated value of the optimal height.
- And last but not least, it is worth describing the least implemented option - installing a sink with a height adjustment mechanism. For installation, screw spiers are used. Alternatively, you can hang the washbasin from the ceiling with ropes. In this case, even a child can easily set the desired height by simply turning the handle or moving the lever.
If the height is not correct
Many owners still underestimate the consequences of improper installation of the washbasin. Especially for them, we will try to describe everything that may threaten as a result of an incorrect determination of the optimal height.
So, if the sink is set low:

In accordance with the specified parameters, the washbasin installation height is sufficient for installation. But the circuit solutions of each sink of the “moidodyr” system often differ. Created in the Soviet Union, GOST is the result of a titanic effort to make common areas as convenient as possible. Separate parameters were provided for preschool, preschool and school washbasins, which should be hung so that children of different ages are as comfortable as possible:

As a rule, in our apartments we use faucets common for sinks and bathtubs with a swivel spout and a shower screen.

Section 6.3 Internal sewerage and drains of SP 73.13330.2012 “Internal sanitary systems of buildings” contains table 3, which shows the recommended installation heights for plumbing fixtures. So, in accordance with this table, the height of the side of the sink above the floor should be: - in residential and public buildings - 600 mm; - in schools, children's and medical institutions - 500 mm; - in preschool institutions and for the disabled - 500 mm. Thus it is not difficult to determine the height of the mixer above the bath, which will be 1200 - 600 = 600 mm. This is the height of the faucet housing and valve installation axes. Considering that the spout itself (gander) also has a size from the point of attachment to the mixer to the hole from which water flows about 15 centimeters, it can be calculated that from the tip of the spout to the side of the bathroom there will be approximately 450 mm. As you can see, the distance is quite sufficient to comfortably use the mixer when filling the bathroom and, if necessary, rinse your hands or wash your hair.
Practice
As practice shows, for all people the optimal height at which the washbasin bowl should be located is different. So, according to studies that take into account the average height depending on gender, it is:
- For men: 950-1020 mm.
- For women: 810-930 mm.
- For teenagers: 650–800 mm.
- For children: 400–600 mm.
Not only the mounting height of the bowl affects the ease of use of the sink. Also, when choosing a sink installation location, the location of other plumbing fixtures should be taken into account:
- There must be at least 300 mm to the edge of the bath or shower.
- To the toilet or bidet - 250 mm.
- To the heated towel rail - at least 600 mm.
In this case, do not forget about the free distance to the walls. To the side partitions should be at least 200 mm, and to the back wall - from 700 to 1000 mm.

Two parameters affect the ease of use of the sink: the width and depth of the bowl.
For a small bathroom, a sink with a width of 300-450 mm is suitable. But using such a miniature sink is not very convenient, as a lot of water is sprayed.

A standard 50–60 cm wide sink will fit perfectly in almost any bathroom.
Products of greater width are recommended to be installed in large rooms where they will not clutter up the space.When installing double bowls, the distance between their centers must be at least 900 mm, otherwise it will be inconvenient to use them at the same time.
Installing two washbasins in the bathroom is a great solution for a large family.
The depth of the bowl affects the splash radius: the deeper the bowl, the less the mirror and the walls around are splashed. The optimal depth for the sink is 450–600 mm, and most products are produced with these values.
Changing the height, as well as the installation location of the washbasin (within the bathroom) is not considered a redevelopment, therefore, it does not require approval. But depending on the peculiarities of regional legislation, after the installation of plumbing with the transfer of wiring (points of water intake and sewage discharge), an inspection of the master of the company serving the apartment building may be required. Such a check is often necessary for the master to make sure that the changes made do not affect the performance of the overall in-house system.

It is not for nothing that the sets, which include a washbasin with a pedestal or cabinets of the “moidodyr” type with a built-in sink, are produced with a height of 80–85 cm.
But if for some reason standard plumbing did not suit you, then no one will forbid you to slightly change the distance from the floor to the top of the sink for ease of use.
If the family has small children, then it is clear that it is not possible for them to install a separate standard children's washbasin in a small bathroom. In this case, bathroom furniture manufacturers offer vanity cabinets equipped with a retractable step.
Also, the best option would be to purchase a footrest, with which it will be convenient for the kids to wash their faces.
I must say that all these norms and rules strictly apply only in multi-apartment residential buildings, where the building design itself is subject to various SNiPs and GOSTs. In private houses, mansions, cottages for redevelopment, installation of plumbing, no approvals or permits are required, and whether or not to follow the standard depends only on the desire of the owners.
