What is an anemostat?

In a modern apartment, an important role is played by ventilation. It ensures the removal of all unwanted odors from the room, proper air circulation, and its timely change. At the same time, the circulation should not create excessive "weathering" of the apartment. Therefore, the possibility of its adjustment depending on the required air exchange indicators is of great importance. This creates the need for various adjustable ventilation elements, one of the varieties of which is an anemostat.

Anemostats for apartment ventilation

What is an anemostat?

The principle of operation of the anemostat is simple. This ventilation element is a plate, most often round, attached to the body with a screw. Such a connection allows, by rotating the plate, to change the amount of air passing through the structure. The anemostat, like ventilation grilles and diffusers, allows you to evenly distribute the incoming air throughout the room, but differs from them in the ability to adjust the air flow.

Types of anemostats

According to the purpose, the devices are divided into three groups:

  1. To supply fresh air to enclosed spaces - supply. As a rule, they have a concave surface.
  2. For ventilation and exhaust from rooms of unwanted odors and excess moisture - exhaust. Their surface has a convex shape, so it is easier for air to get into the ventilation duct.
  3. Combined combine the functions of the two above types. As a rule, they consist of two plates. If a universal anemostat is used for exhaust, then both plates form two slotted gaps. When only an influx of fresh air is required, one of the slots is covered with a corresponding plate.

Anemostats are round or rectangular. They are made of plastic, galvanized steel or aluminum. The choice of material from which the element is made should be carried out taking into account the microclimate of the room where it will work:

  • For bathrooms, showers and rooms with high humidity, it is better to take a device made of plastic.
  • If it is planned to supply a heated air flow to the room, then it is more reliable to choose a metal anemostat, it is more resistant to temperature loads.

Adjusting the air flow in the room

Airflow control can be done mechanically or automatically. In the first case, you will have to manually change the position of the plate. Automatic control is much more convenient, but will require an electrical connection and a switch.

Device characteristics

The main characteristics of the device are:

  • Dimensions. For round models, this is the diameter, and for rectangular models, the length and width of the element. They should be selected in such a way that they correspond to the dimensions of the ventilation ducts.
  • The distance the plate moves.

These two characteristics together determine the minimum and maximum area of the slot through which air passes. On the packaging of the device, the range of its throughput is usually placed - the volume of air passing through the anemostat per unit of time.

Installation of anemostats

Installation of the device is carried out at the construction stage. There are several main ways to attach this ventilation element:

  1. The product is mounted directly on the ceiling or walls of the room using self-tapping screws or on traverses.
  2. A junction box is used for installation.

The installation of the anemostat should be carried out in such a way as to exclude, if possible, the laying of additional ventilation ducts. This may lead to the need for major repairs in the room. In addition, the anemostat should harmoniously fit into the overall interior of the room.So there is no need for precise planning.

Mounting the appliance on the ceiling

The slightest installation error, such as tilt or instability of the structure, can lead to inefficient operation. Therefore, it is advisable to entrust the installation to professionals.

Differences between an anemostat and a diffuser

Metal diffuser

Often, when planning work to modernize the ventilation system, ordinary people confuse these two elements. In appearance, they really, at first glance, are similar. In fact, the difference between them is quite significant: the diffuser, unlike the anemostat, does not have the function of adjusting the flow of air passing through it. Only installation of additional lattices on some models is possible. The diffuser has a greater throughput and a significant angle of dispersion of air jets.
