The most interesting moment in the repair of premises is the work with wallpaper. Vinyl wallpaper today is considered the most popular way to finish the walls. In rooms with a high risk of contamination on the walls, this type of coating is best suited.
Pros and cons of vinyl wallpaper
A feature of this type of coating can be attributed to multi-layer. Vinyl wallpapers are produced in rolls, a decorative layer is applied over the paper base. Coverage benefits include:
- Strength;
- The durability of the material;
- Moisture resistant;
- Ability to apply to any interior.
The disadvantages of vinyl are toxicity, impermeability to air, and difficulty in gluing. However, toxic fumes appear only in materials from dubious manufacturers. Non-woven vinyl is safe, breathable, and the gluing process is not that complicated.
Cooking Tools
To work, you need to prepare the following tools:
- glue brush;
- roller for rolling joints;
- spatula and knife for trimming excess;
- roulette;
- Ruler and pencil;
- napkin to remove excess glue;
- scissors;
- brush or clean rag to smooth the canvases;
- brush for applying glue in hard-to-reach places.
What glue can be used?
There is a large selection of special compositions in hardware stores, ranging from special types of glue for vinyl wallpaper to its universal variety. Universal adhesive suitable for any type of coating. Due to the increased ability of such glue to slip, you can easily adjust the canvas. When diluted, universal glue does not form lumps, but is stored for up to 8 days. Before gluing vinyl wallpaper, you must read the instructions for its preparation, which can be found on the package.
The subtleties of gluing various types of wallpaper
In order to find out how to glue vinyl wallpaper, you need to clarify the features of their varieties:
- With a layer of foamed vinyl or structural. This variety is used on uneven surfaces, wood, plywood and fiberboard. With their help, all the irregularities are hidden, creating an interesting play of light on the glued base.
- Vinyl wallpaper hot stamping. This variety is represented by unusual colors and textures. With their help, you can also mask all surface irregularities. Such a base will retain its original appearance for a long time.
- Silkscreen. This species has a paper base, they look stylish and expensive. The pasting process is not easy: the canvas must be glued end-to-end, however, when it dries, the edges may move apart.
- Washable vinyl wallpaper. Such a coating is used to repair the kitchen.
- Solid or evaporated type of coatings. They are often used for painting.
Pasting the first canvas
The temperature in the room where the repair takes place should be between 23-24˚ C. At this optimum temperature, drying will take place evenly. Of course, there should be no direct sun, draft and dampness. The room is not ventilated until the vinyl wallpaper is completely dry.
First you need to clarify the height of the wall without the plinth. Set aside the desired size on the canvas, adding 5-6 cm. The canvases are cut as the work progresses so that there are no errors when drawing up the drawing. If there is no specific pattern, then the strips can be cut immediately. Experts recommend placing the first panel along the window. This way you can avoid noticeable seams.
Before gluing vinyl wallpaper, a mark is made on the wall using a plumb line or building level, a vertical strip is marked with a ruler, measuring 50 cm from the window (with a wallpaper width of 53 cm). When working with wide panels, lay 103 cm (with a web width of 106 cm).
The canvas is laid face down, glue is applied to half of the strip and folded in half, with the second half proceed in the same way. The impregnation time of dense vinyl wallpaper is 5-7 minutes. The wall must also be impregnated with an adhesive solution.
The process of gluing the strip starts from the top, without unbending the bottom half. The canvas is aligned along the allotted line, the base is pressed against the wall, with the help of a napkin, air bubbles are squeezed out from the middle part to the edges. Do the same with the bottom. Wide vinyl wallpaper is more convenient to glue together. Excess fabric is trimmed with a spatula and a knife.
How to join canvases on straight sections and corners?
The next canvas is placed end-to-end, without overlap. With a correctly selected pattern, the junctions of the canvases remain invisible. The joints of the panels are rolled with a special roller.
At the core pasting corners is another technology. If the corners of the walls are uneven, then the canvases will be skewed, especially for wide wallpapers. It is not recommended to join strips in the corners, as well as to make a wide approach.
How to glue vinyl wallpaper in uneven corners can be found by using the following tips:
- the corner is carefully smeared with an adhesive solution using a small brush.
- the canvas is cut so wide that the edge goes no more than 2-3 cm around the corner.
- The adjacent strip should overlap the glued base by at least 5-6 cm (if you leave less, then at curved corners you get a gap);
- two strips of overlapped cloths are cut along the ruler, the cut edge is removed, the joint is smeared with an adhesive solution and rolled with a roller.
Sticking vinyl wallpaper is not particularly different from gluing other type of coverage. There are, of course, certain nuances, but the basis of the process and its stages remain the same. It is not difficult to glue such a coating, so you can not only save on the services of professionals, but also get a high-quality appearance of the walls.
