Modern taps have fairly hard water. It contains a large amount of calcium and magnesium salts, which form limescale. To get rid of them, install a magnetic water filter. It is also often referred to as a softener. Under the influence of a magnetic field, salts change their structure. Thanks to this, the water becomes softer, and limescale does not form in heating appliances - irons, kettles, steamers, humidifiers.
Why you need a magnetic filter
Modern tap water goes through a million purifications. Pathogenic organisms, harmful impurities, large particles, etc. are removed in it. However, it is not always possible to remove mineral impurities. A small amount of them can even be useful for humans, but in tap water these figures are ten times higher. Magnesium and calcium salts are especially harmful and difficult to control. It is because of their high content that hard-to-remove limescale deposits form. However, scale brings not only aesthetic discomfort. Because of it, many household appliances fall into disrepair faster: water heaters, kettles, washing machines.
An excess of mineral salts is also harmful to the human body. Hard water adversely affects the state of internal organs, especially the organs of the digestive tract and excretory system. When washing the head and skin with hard water, their appearance worsens. In addition, soaps, shampoos, detergents and other detergents in hard water produce much less foam, so you have to increase their consumption in order to achieve results.
Things that are washed in hard water also suffer: salts also accumulate in them. As a result, the clothes begin to tear, the fabric becomes stiff and rough. Such things quickly become unusable, which also leads to additional expenses.
Magnetic filters for water purification will help to avoid these troubles, softening the water and reducing the content of calcium and magnesium salts in it.
The principle of operation of the magnetic filter
How does a magnetic filter get rid of salts that make water hard? Everything is very simple. Very powerful magnets are installed on the filter, due to the influence of which the structure of the salts changes: they become looser. Thanks to these changes, substances cease to be deposited in the form of plaque on various surfaces, including water heating elements, do not stick together into larger fractions and do not settle in the form of sand. Also, due to the constant influence of the magnetic field, the existing limescale begins to change its structure and peel off.
The filter consists of 2 powerful magnets, between which a field is created that acts on the water. They are enclosed in a plastic case, which is attached to the pipe.
It is possible to install a magnetic filter only on a pipe cleared of old scale. However, there is no need to dismantle the entire plumbing, it is enough to replace only the area where the device will be installed.
Filter magnets are made very powerful. In this case, rare earth metals are used, which for a long time retain their performance. On average, over 10 years, the loss of magnetic properties does not exceed 0.5%.
When can a magnetic filter be used?
The filter with magnets is absolutely harmless and safe for humans, so it can be used in any case where water softening is necessary. Such a filter can also be installed in cases where the salt content is normal in order to protect the equipment from the formation of limescale.
The magnetic softener can be used in conjunction with any equipment.It is attached to water pipes and hoses leading to:
- to water heating boilers;
- boilers;
- cooling systems;
- household appliances: washing machines, dishwashers, etc.;
- pumps, water-lifting columns, pumping stations;
- steam boilers;
- on water pipes in the apartment.
Advantages of magnetic filters
Electromagnetic filters have their advantages and disadvantages. What is so good about these devices, which have become used everywhere, both at home and at work? Of the positive qualities can be noted:
- compactness - the magnetic filter takes up a minimum of space, so it can be easily used in a room of any type and size;
- there is no need to dismantle the pipes, because the filter is put on from the outside, from above;
- there are various systems for fixing the softener on the pipe: latches, screw fastening, etc., each user can choose a convenient option for himself;
- a variety of filter shapes: these can be tubes that practically do not take up space, small rectangular boxes, etc., it is always possible to choose the device that best suits the conditions of the apartment;
- starts working immediately after installation, no need for additional connections;
- ease of handling: when installing a magnetic water filter, it will work continuously and uninterruptedly until the end of its service life, without requiring additional actions;
- the filter does not need a separate power supply, all action is based on the action of a magnetic field;
- long service life - from 5 to 25 years;
- no rinsing required
- no consumables, no need to replace cartridges;
- no need for complex settings;
- pipe corrosion is reduced (up to 50%);
- magnetic filter is environmentally friendly and safe;
- does not pose a threat to the life and activities of people, animals;
- the risk of accidents is reduced.
Disadvantages of a magnetic softener
There are several disadvantages of this type of water filter from scale. But there are very few of them, and they are lost under such an impressive list of advantages. What is wrong with this device?
- Oxidation of the water purifier itself, over time, an unpleasant-looking green coating forms on it, somewhat reminiscent of plasticine. However, it is easily removed.
- Over time, the water can sort of get used to the effects of magnets, this will be noticeable by the fact that the device will filter less efficiently. To get rid of this effect, you need to remove the device for a while, and then reinstall it. Before re-fastening, as well as before the first, it is advisable to clean the pipe of dirt accumulated in it.
- The magnetic filter is quite demanding on working conditions: water must constantly flow through the pipe at a certain speed. If the flow stops or its speed is above or below certain parameters, then the efficiency of the device will drop sharply or even drop to 0. It is also impossible for the water temperature to be above certain indicators. Most appliances are designed for warm liquids, around room temperature or colder.
Types of magnetic filters
Currently, various types of filters have already been developed:
- Magnetic flange.
- Magnetic coupling.
- Mesh coupling.
- Magnetic mesh flange.
- Magnetic-mechanical.
The type of device depends on what contaminants, in addition to calcium and magnesium salts, the filter can fight. Many devices can be used as compact cleaning systems, because they are able to trap many impurities, iron oxides, the smallest particles of various substances, sand and other mechanical impurities. Therefore, they try to install magnetic filters immediately when installing new water supply systems.
Installation of the magnetic filter
You can install a water softener with your own hands.This will require some skills, especially if the pipes are old and already covered.
- First you have to cut a piece of pipe. To do this, turn off the water supply from the riser. Faucets are usually located next to the counters. Then, with a grinder or with the help of scissors, the pipe is cut through metal-plastic
- Under the wiring, you will have to substitute a basin or lay a rag, because water will run out of it. Fluid must be drained completely.
- Now you need to clean the pipe ends from the inside and outside of dirt and scale.
- A fum tape is wound on the cleaned sections and fittings with adapters are installed. Adapters must match the size of the magnetic filter.
- The cleaning device is fixed on the pipe, the fasteners are carefully pulled.
Now you can connect the water and check for leaks. If water does not seep through, then the installation is correct and you can use the filter.
